Matinee for iPhone

Something not working, or not obvious? Write to hello@matineejournal.com and you'll get a reply from the person who made the app.

Getting started

You don't need an account. Open the app, tap +, search for a film, and it's in your journal. Where you saw it, when, what you thought — all optional, all addable later.

Signing in matters for two things: keeping your journal if you change phones, and sharing anything with a friend.

Signing in

The code never arrived

Codes come from hello@matineejournal.com and usually land within a minute. If nothing appears, check the junk folder, then send a fresh code — the app allows a new one every sixty seconds. An old code stops working once you ask for another.

I already had a journal on this phone

It comes with you. When you sign into an account that already exists, everything logged on the phone beforehand joins that journal — the app tells you how many tickets are about to move.

Signing in on a second phone

Use the same email or the same Apple ID and your journal is there. Both phones stay in step, refreshing when you open the app or pull down on the journal.

Friends

Open Account and tap your season pass to turn it over — the back is your invitation. A friend scans the code, or you send them the link with the share button. They ask, you confirm; nobody is added silently.

To remove someone, press and hold their name in the friends list. That severs it both ways, immediately.

Watching together

While logging a film, tap with and choose a friend. A copy of that screening lands in their journal, and from then on each of you scores it and writes about it separately — their words never overwrite yours. Both tickets show who was there.

Untagging someone detaches the two copies. It does not delete their ticket: they keep the film, without the faces.

Lists

Every account has its own watchlist, and you can make more. Share one with a friend and you both add to it; anyone on a list can rename it, while sharing it further, removing someone, or deleting it stays with whoever started it.

Logging a film doesn't take it off a list — it gets a watched banner and sinks below the ones still waiting. Swipe it away when you want it gone.

Deleting your account

Open Account and choose Delete this account. Your journal, venues, lists, photos and profile are erased at once and cannot be recovered. A friend's own copy of a film you watched together stays in their journal, and a list you started passes to whoever else is on it. The details are in the privacy policy.

Still stuck

Email hello@matineejournal.com. It helps to say which iPhone you're on, what you tapped, and what happened instead.
